Santo Domingo Mission

Santo Domingo Mission

Central region of New MexicoThe old Mission Church was one of the largest and finest in New Mexico but was eventually, despite attempts by the Indians to save it, destroyed by flooding of the Rio Grande. Before the final catastrophe, everything movable was carried away from the church. What was left of the original is completely gone.

A new mission church, lacking the same historical significance, was later contructed and still exits.

Santa Domingo Pueblo is known for its fine turquoise jewelry and a long tradition of trading. Visit the pueblo on August 4, the feast day of St. Dominic (Santo Domingo) to enjoy the traditional Corn Dance and ceremonies at the church. Another good time to visit is Labor Day weekend, when the annual Arts and Crafts Market is held.
