Apache Point Observatory

Apache Point Observatory

You are welcome to walk the grounds during daylight hours (7am - 5pm), 7-days a week. Although privately-owned, the observatory does offer limited-access.

Tours of the 3.5m and 2.5m telescopes and their control rooms may be available for astronomy clubs, church organizations, school groups, and other interested organizations. We are unable to offer daily tours or general access for the public. Tour requests must be received no later than 48 hours in advance.

Groups sizes are limited to approximately 15 people; larger groups can be accommodated by splitting the group.

Hours available for tours are between 9:00am -11:00am or 1:00pm - 3:30pm, Monday - Friday.

If approved, your tour host will be on site 30 minutes prior to your arrival. During summer, be sure to bring a light jacket for cool afternoons. Also, be aware of the symptoms for Altitude Illness.

APO also participates in the Sunspot Astronomy and Visitor Center, located 2 miles from our site at the National Solar Observatory. The center offers interactive exhibits and displays, and self-guided walking tours of their telescopes. Operating hours of the center vary, please check ahead. Picnic and restroom facilities for small and large groups are available, as well as a gift shop.

To make a tour reservation or if you have questions, please contact Gretchen Van Doren, 575-437-6822.
