Puye Scenic Byway

Puye Scenic Byway

Northeast region of New Mexico The only Scenic Byway located entirely on an Indian Pueblo, the Puye Scenic Byway is a route into the rich cultural and historic areas of the Santa Clara people. The Tribe's nearly 46,000 acre reservation epitomizes the beauty and majesty of New Mexico's diverse landscape. To visit the Puye Cliff Dwellings, best known landmark of the Santa Clara Pueblo, is to appreciate the 12th Century heritage and surroundings from which the present day tribal way of living and beliefs evolved. The ancient dwellings located in the Puye Cliffs were carved into the jagged volcanic tufa, a rock formed from compressed volcanic ash and cinders, and were eventually expanded to include adobe structures along the slopes and on top of the numerous mesas.
