Tourism Department Research

The New Mexico Tourism Department maintains a Travel and Tourism Research Program that is responsible for collecting, gathering and disseminating information and research on the New Mexico travel and tourism Industry. The research program collects travel statistics on many facets of the travel and tourism industry. In addition, The New Mexico Tourism Department is responsible for conducting several research studies each year.

A. Travel Statistics

Lodging revenues

Many New Mexico municipalities and counties collect a lodgers tax from visitors. Lodging revenue data are compiled and reported by county on a quarterly basis.

TravelScope

TravelScope is an omnibus panel survey conducted nationwide. Twenty-five thousand United States citizens a month are polled with regard to their travel habits, and NMTD has access to findings on a quarterly basis. Travelscope provides timely information on visitors to New Mexico.

Tourism Barometer

A tourism barometer was developed as a tool to monitor the state of the industry on a quarterly basis. The tourism barometer is based on a sampling of data from representative tourism businesses in twelve regions throughout the state. An index was developed for each business, for each region, and for the state as a whole, with 2002 set at 100.

Visitor Information Center Statistics

The New Mexico Tourism Department has nine Visitor Information Centers, located primarily on major entry points into New Mexico. All visitors that enter the centers for tourism information are counted and asked to provide residency and party size information. Results are reported quarterly.

Intercept survey results at the Visitor Information Centers

Intercept surveys are conducted randomly on an on-going basis at the state’s nine Visitor Information Centers. The surveys collect geographic, demographic and trip characteristics from people currently visiting in New Mexico. Results are reported quarterly.

Economic impacts

Economic Impactidentifies the economic impacts that travel and tourism has on the New Mexican economy, including the number of travelers/tourists to New Mexico, their total spending, and the economic and fiscal impacts of expenditures, including jobs generated, secondary impacts, and taxes generated. These data are reported at the county level on an annual basis.

The New Mexico Tourism Department conducts ongoing research on visitors, including conversion surveys and focus groups. In this section, executive summaries of the most recent research results are provided. The older studies are periodically replaced with more current ones.

“The Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) at the University of New Mexico conducts economic and demographic research and analysis for the State of New Mexico. The BBER also maintains a major depository of socioeconomic data (the Data Bank) for the State. This depository includes an extensive decennial census collection, along with a wide assortment of other economic and demographic information.”

“The Albuquerque International Airport maintains monthly statistics on passenger totals (enplanement and deplanement) as well as car rental gross revenue.
